New drink

Had the chance to try a new drink last night after work. New to me, anyways. I didn’t really feel like drinking a beer for my “free after the shift is over drink” so I asked the other bartender for a suggestion and she came up with the mojito. Let me tell you – this is a great drink!

I watched her make it. She took a tall glass and dropped a couple lime wedges in the bottom. Then she sprinkled a couple teaspoons or so of sugar into the glass. Then she sprinkled some mint leaves in the glass and took a little stick-type bar tool and smashed the stuff in the bottom of the glass to mix it up. (Found out later that the tool was a “muddler.” Who knew there was a tool for this?) The lime juice melted the sugar into a thick syrup and mashing the mint leaves spreads the mint flavor through the syrup.

Then she fills the glass with ice cubes and pours a couple shots of white rum over the ice. Fill the glass the rest of the way with club soda, and stir. I’ll have to start making these for some of my regulars that are always looking for something new to try that is nice and cool for the hot summer months!

Starbucks is helping

Today I actually got a second mocha with whipped creame, I do love those so, but getting this second one put my espresso intake at about 5 shots within just a few hours, so I decided to get a bottle of water to help ease the stress on the kidneys. I was quite impressed with the cool shape of the water bottle I received from Starbucks, and then found it even cooler after reading the label.

Ethos water, helping children get clean water it says. That’s all I need to know to enjoy buying this water, and drinking it made me feel good emotionally, and physically too. It tastes good, and it helps some needy kids, why can’t all things that taste good do that for the world?

Foreclosures are everywhere you look

I’m sick of reading about the wave of foreclosures as the greedy mortgage companies move in for the kill and take back all these houses that were financed with sub prime loans. There are some simple solutions to the major problem, but the government moves so slowly and is so distracted by special interest groups and lobbyists that help from the government is a very long way off, if it ever happens for the distressed homeowner at all.

If the federal government can’t step up and fix this problem, then the states need to get busy and intervene. The focus should be on helping the homeowners stay in their homes. It should not be focused on helping the mortgage companies. It’s in my opinion, that the mortgage companies are the criminals and should be punished, not rewarded. What do you think?

Health Care Reform

I like that the Democrats are pushing for health care reform. That is the main reason that I have an interest in Hillary Clinton. With her in depth research from years ago to her new influence and connections, if Hillary is elected we have a good chance, as a nation, to see some great improvements in access to health care for every citizen.

I have always loved the fact that Canada and England provide basic health care to all citizens and I think the U.S. needs to use their program as a model or basis for our own reform.

Starting out small

With so much great weather out this year I have started a home garden to keep me entertained during the day time. I went to my local garden store and got some great tomato and cucumber seeds and some pots and soil to put them in and have a fun time taking care of them over the last couple of weeks.

With prices at the stores only going up for everything it only made sense to start growing my own vegetables. If I do good this year hopefully I will be able to grow a lot more different types of vegetables next year or maybe year around indoors but I want to make sure I have somewhat of a green thumb before I do anything BIG in the coming years.
